I have loved reading all your e-mails for the past couple of weeks. I look forward to seeing what you think of the latest news. Between an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, President Joe Biden stepping down as the Democratic nominee and Kamala Harris taking his place, we’re certainly living in what feels like unprecedented times.
On Sunday afternoon, a couple days after the Republican National Convention ended and eight days after a gunman tried to assassinate Donald Trump, President Joe Biden announced he would no longer be running for president.
The news may not have been shocking, but the timing and the way Biden went about announcing the news – via statement, rather than an on-camera appearance – was unusual.
My colleague Ingrid Jacques had just returned from the RNC and asked in a column a question many Republicans are wondering: If Biden can’t campaign, is he still fit to serve? Many conservatives don’t think so. I certainly don’t.
As predicted, Kamala Harris has slipped into the presidential candidate slot in Biden’s stead. In a column published Monday, I argued that the Democratic Party was forced to choose her because they’ve advocated for woke identity politics for years.
I wrote: “What does she stand for? What can she do? Why has none of this been a problem for her political ascension? Because Harris, the first Black, South Asian and female vice president of the United States, is the trifecta of identity politics: Black, female and liberal.”
That sounds harsh, but I’m curious if other conservatives agree or disagree. How could Democrats choose anyone else but her? They couldn’t, and so they didn’t.
The Democratic Party has quickly tried to push Harris to the helm, but I still have questions for her about what she knew regarding Biden’s failing health. I asked these and more in a column published Wednesday. Did Harris know Biden’s health was failing? If so, when? Does she think he’s still capable of being the president? While she’s away campaigning and he was ill with COVID at the White House, who was leading the country?
My colleague Dace Potas, a Gen Z conservative, argued in a recent column that Harris’ presence in the race will propel Trump to victory.
What do you think of Kamala Harris running for president instead of Biden? Can she beat Trump? Let me know at [email protected].
